Chapter 6 – Ethics and Privacy There are a few types of things to look at. We have the Utilitarian approach, which chooses an outcome with the reasoning that it provides the maximum amount of good to as many people as possible. Next up is the Rights Approach, which is considered to choose the path that best preserves and adheres to the moral rights of everyone involved. Following this is the Fairness Approach, which seeks to treat everyone equally or, if that isn't appropriate, fairly. And the last approach is the Common Good Approach, best described to serve the community and the welfare of everyone therein in the most proficient way. A code of ethics is a collection of standards that guides a business' decisions and is meant to complement the approach that a business chooses. We can also recognise a ladder of steps that best frames how to deal with an ethical dilemma: - Recognise the ethical issue at hand - Get all the relevant facts - Evaluate all alternative routes and op...
Chapter 5 – Business Intelligence   Welcome again guys, in this chapter we'll look at business intelligence.  Business Intelligence definition: is the way businesses gather, store, access and analyse data they collect over time.    In doing these things, businesses streamline their decision-making process. This is crucial in the business world. Management's primary job is to make decisions, and they've got to make good ones to see their business succeed. A decision is typically seen as a choice between two, or maybe more, pathways. The process of making a decision involves identifying what the problem is, what the options are to addressing the problem and then choosing one of the options and how to implement the solution. The following are incentives for businesses to implement IT to help this decision-making process: - the amount of options open for consideration is on the continual climb - the vast majority of decisions are pressured to be timely - each deci...
Chapter 4 – telecommunications and Networking   This week we'll be looking at telecommunications and networking.    A computer network is a system connecting computers and other devices through communications media so data and information can be transmitted between them. With computer networks comes bandwidth, which is the transmission capacity, or the speed, of a network. These networks run on what's known as broadband, which can range from a small Personal Area Network (PAN) to a Wide Area Network (WAN) or even beyond into the broader internet. The most common network is a LAN or Local Area Network, connecting 2 or more devices in a small region.   Then there are the network fundamentals. To start with, we must distinguish between analogue and digital signals. Analogue signals are a continuous wave, measured by its amplitude (volume) and frequency (pitch). Digital signals, on the other hand, are more discrete and are either on or off.   The next fundame...
Chapter 3 – Data and knowledge Management  How ya going This blog will talk about data and knowledge management. All businesses have data. They must ensure that their data is of high quality. That is, it must be: - accurate - complete - timely - consistent - accessible - relevant - concise On top of these, a business' data is increasing exponentially. This means that it is crucial that data is managed. To manage data effectively, a business must always update its data, manage different sources and secure its data. Data governance refers to an approach to managing information across an organisation. Mast data management is a strategy of data governance and allows organisations to store, maintain, exchange and synchronise its data in a consistent, accurate and timely fashion. A great way to manage data is through databases, which have changed throughout the past half-century, starting with storing in many places evolving into the mainframe database approach. The move to databa...
